May 2,1688. The ship is still three days from port to the New World. Your father's condition has worsened but he is still able to talk through murmurs and gestures. A common woman sits reading in the corner. Across from her is a solitary door leading back uot into the main galley.
[[Try talking to your Father]]
[[Try talking to your the woman]]
[[Exit through the door]]
Hi dad are you feeling better?
[[give him some rum]]
[[ask about the trip]]
[[return to Room->Intro]]Oh, so you do speak. My name is Charlotte. I am on my way to New England to start a new life, though, I have to work off the cost of my travel expense first once I get there.
[[You speak of Indentured Servitude?]] You find yourself in a long hallway. Various Barrels and crates secured to the walls creak to and fro as the ship lurches through the Atlantic. The faint sound of music can be heard beyond a door to the right.
[[Enter the dark Door on the left, it's rusty lock dangles loosely from it's latch.]]
[[Speak to the ship mate]]
[[enter the far door to the right]]
[[Return to your Room->Intro]]Well,.yes, I suppose you are right. But my cousins have all done it too and most of them have done well for themselves. I left my two children behind in the Netherlands with their grandparents. My hope is, in a few years, after my work is done with Mr.Bridgges, my debt will be paid and I can earn money to prepare to bring them here. Start a new life.
The smell of rum and tobacco fill your nostrils as you enter the dark room. The only light emanating from an oil lantern atop a barrel illuminating the Captain of the ship. He appears to be writing something.
[[How are you Captain? All goes well to port?"]]
The Captain, startled, quickly tucks away his papers and glares at you.
" M'Lady, I thought I gave orders for all passengers to remain in their room. I will have Hernando's head for this."
"There is nothing to it. Return to your room at once. I have matters to attend to on deck. I'll have enough to deal with should the British fleet decide to inspect us. Blasted blockades. They come and go like the wind."
Captain Avrum storms off.
[[return to the hallway ->Exit through the door]]
[[Inspect the room]]Hola, my name is Hernando. Top ABS here. That's Able Bodies Sailor. Captain said all passengers should remain in their room until the rough waters have passed.
[[Is there something wrong? Are we in Danger?]]
[[My father is ill. Do we have any medicine on board?]]
This is a larger room. The entire stern side is filled with crates and sacks. A few rats scramble as you enter kicking up dust and grain. On the opposite end is a doorway, slightly ajar, a flicking candlelight dances across the wooden planks of the floor.
[[Enter Doorway]]
[[search crates]]
[[return to Hallway->Exit through the door]]Oh no. No danger at all. It's like this all the time. We may be a slow ship but we are a big one, we sure are. Nothing to fear. Not even pirates, what with the British Navy patrolling these waters. Other than a few swigs of rum I am afriad there isn't much we can do at this point. Perhaps one of the other passangers may have something to ease his discomfort. Before you sits Chizoba, a well dressed African gentleman playing a stringed intrument and humming a tune. He smiles at you and motions you to have a seat.
[[Sit down and listen to Chizoba's song]]
[[Ignore Chizoba and inspect the room. There is a chest at the base of a crude straw bed.->inspect chest]]
[[return to the storage room->enter the far door to the right]]
Most of the crates are sealed tight with rope and nails. The few bags of grain lay secure, a few torn open by rats. Some of the writing on the crates read, " Origin:Barbados".
[[return to Storage Room->enter the far door to the right]]My name is Chizoba,.of the igbo tribe. I am a free man. An entrepeneur. I have sailed with Captain Azvrum for 6 months now. I am delivering some tobacco from Barbados to the New World.
[[ I thought it was illegal to sell directly to the New World]]
You squat down in front of the chest. Secured with a bronze padlock with a pelican carving. As you tug at the lock it crumbles into dust and breaks loose.
Ah yes, of course. The Queen must have her taxes, which is why we stopped in the Netherlands before embarking to the New World. Lucky for you it seems, I saw you and your father run to get on board at the last minute. But fear not, Captain Avrum has assured me that my goods are properly taxed and he has the recipts to prove it. You notice several small crates have been moved. The scratches and dust on the floor indicate that they were moved away from the wall recently. Giving the wall a slight nudge it gives way to a small hidden compartment.
Here you find some old wine, an ornate chest, and a box full of old reciepts. YOu give rum. Double-click this passage to edit it.
